The village, situated between Spennymoor and Brancepeth, sprang from a green field site in the middle of the 19th century, thrived for over 70 years through its coal mine, coke ovens and brickworks, and which gradually disappeared after battling local bureaucracy, but was finally beaten by a force of nature 50 years ago - the flood waters of the River Wear.
